The story of the Dorchester Carnival Band
The Dorchester Carnival Band has travelled extensively around Dorset, Devon, Somerset, Wiltshire and Hampshire and even up as far as Worcester. They also performed at a Tattoo in Braintree, Essex. In December 1996 the band were invited to appear in the Grand London Parade, and did so in front of a million or so people. In 1996 and again in 1999 the band travelled to Holbaek in Denmark our twinned town.
In 2000 the Holbaek Guard Band came to visit us for a week. There were about 80 young band members, both girls and boys. They had a very busy but enjoyable time and they even took part in Puddletown Carnival with the Dorchester Carnival Band, and were a great success. The age group of the Dorchester Carnival Band once ranged from the youngest at fourteen/fifteen, to the oldest in his sixties. Band numbers also include female members. The Hazelton family consists of Dad, Mum and daughter (Bugle, Bell and Side Drum) and all are keen band members.
Job-wise amongst the band we have Plumbers, Builders, Electricians, an Ex-Bugle Major from the Royal Green Jackets, an Ex-Inspector of Police and one serving Policeman. In fact from all walks of life. (It's pretty handy at times!!!)
In the past the Band has been asked to appear in France, Belgium and Germany. There is always have a full engagement book for Carnivals in the United Kingdom.......
